CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT: piano students

A young beginner can start on a smaller keyboard, but they will quickly grow past it.

One option is to get an acoustic piano. Often you can find one for free or very low cost from someone not needing theirs anymore. I often have people offer them to me, so please let me know if you're interested in have an acoustic piano in your home. Please note they will need to be tuned and serviced regularly.

I understand that sometimes space is a factor, so if you're looking to get an electric piano or keyboard, you'll want it to be as much like an acoustic piano as possible. That means looking for one that has:

WEIGHTED KEYS: This will help it to feel like you're playing an acoustic, and helps students develop the technique needed to be successful.

TOUCH RESPONSE: This means if you push a key lightly it will play a soft sound, and if you push hard it will play loud. Many keyboards at a low price point do not have this feature and students can't learn to play dynamics, which is a hindrance.

FULL KEYBOARD: 88 keys

OTHER ESSENTIALS:  A stand to place the keyboard on, a bench set at the correct height, and an attached music stand are all important parts of establishing good practice habits and posture at home.

Some options to consider:

Alesis Recital Pro 88-Key Digital Piano

Yamaha P45-LXB Digital Piano

Donner DDP-90 Digital Piano

These are obviously not your only choices, but these are some of the options in the lowest price point that still have the features required. If you find another option and want to know my opinion - please just ask!

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT: percussion students

A young beginner needs a pair of sticks and a practice pad on a stand. If they desire to learn to play mallets, they will also need a set of orchestral bells.

Some options to consider:

Majestic Bell and Practice Pad Kit

Pearl Percussion Kit

Giantex Percussion Kit

CHOOSING AN INSTRUMENT: violin students

Because of the cost of purchasing a quality violin and bow, often beginner students will rent for the first several years. Please message or call us for recommendations of places to rent from.
